Skagit June 30, 2007
I worked as a guide on this trip for Downstream River Runners.
The trip was for a group of families whose children all went to the same elementary school. There were 24 in all; about half the group were adults, the rest were children.
The Skagit is ideal for a trip like this. It has a lot of flat water for optional swimming, with some class II rapids and one class III rapid as a highlight after lunch.
The Skagit is designated National Wild & Scenic, preventing any further development. Most of this section flows through the Mount Baker National Forest.
This was a really fun group to guide down the river. We all had a great time. There are more pictures on

The group is all suited up and ready to go.

Some decided to swim while lunch is being prepared.

Thomas and I set out the lunch.

We continued down the river after lunch, and stopped at one of the many creeks.

We taught the youngsters how to cross swift water in a huddle to keep from being swept away.

Crossing mostly on foot, they swung through the last pool on a rope.

Some chose to sit in the sun and observe.

After everyone crossed, we hiked a short distance upstream to a larger, deeper pool.
